3 Questions. 5 Minutes. Unlimited Potential.

Big projects are the ones that get us ahead.  They shift us into the limelight.  They drive new clients.  They impress, inspire, and innovate.

The trouble is that big projects can often be pretty overwhelming, which leads to procrastination and a loss of productivity.  I’m sure you know the feeling.  You slide in and out of a workday without having made a dent in the “big project”: you sit down to work on the “big project” and there’s a knock at your door, a fire to fight, a paper that must get filed right away.

The good news is that spending five minutes at the beginning of each day answering these questions will combat the overwhelmed feeling.  It’s that simple.  If you can commit to that, I guarantee that you will go even further this year than you’d hoped!

  1. What is the one thing that I can do to move me towards my goal?  Pick one simple, specific task and do it today.  Get specific.  Will you call Dr. Smith?  Will you email your new client?  What is that one thing?
  2. Are the other items on my ToDo list moving me towards my goal?  Take a look.  Are the things on your list tasks that will help you get ahead in the ways that you want?  If not, delegate them, remove them or chunk them together (Ex: errands, phone calls, at computer) to get them done quickly.  However you handle them, get them off of your list first thing.
  3. What, when finished, will make me feel proud/energized/motivated today?  Certainly, looking back and remembering that you filed a paper or paid a bill is not likely to excite you, but submitting an article to your local paper or uploading a video to YouTube very well might be memorable.

Doing this simple exercise works because the questions bring your focus back to your goal.  They help you hone in on the actions that really matter and will make a difference.  And, they break through your (admittedly unintentional) efforts to procrastinate by tackling un-related tasks.

It’s the deep questions, thoughtfully answered, that set our course for what’s next professionally.  I encourage you to spend 5 minutes, each day before you dive in, to reflect on the answers to the above.  To reach within yourself and drive yourself forward.  I promise that doing so will help you to stay focused and achieve what you aimed for in 2013.
